DR. STONE - ANIME FINAL PROJECT

This was my college final for an elective.

First, I was to redesign a manga cover for a series that was taught in class.
In Dr. Stone, everyone is suddenly petrified to stone and the protagonist uses his intellect to bring humanity back to form. I wanted to play with the idea of the characters being in stone. I thought of portraying them as famous statues, representative of their character. That is why I chose The Thinker for this artwork.
The logo, in the original design, was bold transparent text with cracking throughout. In my reinterpretation, I used a more archaic/ancient-looking font. I wanted to have more representation of science in the logo. I placed an atom with a stone nucleus in the centre.

Second, I was to redesign any character from the series.
When I first saw the protagonist, Senku, I thought he looked ridiculous. His hair reminded me of bok choy and he does not come off as a serious scientist type. He was definitely suffering from the anime-protagonist-hair syndrome.
For his redesign, I took an approach where he looked relatively normal before the inciting incident. After being petrified by a green light, his hair and eye colour become affected by it so he still keeps his original colour palette. I went for a more natural style for his hair. The world ended so there wouldn't be hair gel readily available. I thought it would be a cool idea for his natural hair colour to slowly grow back in to show how time is passing through the series.
Characters that have been petrified in the series have these black scar-like lines on their faces. It is a cool detail but I thought it would be better if they were just scars in general, playing more into the realism aspect of this science-heavy series.
For his clothes, I went with ingenious Inuit-inspired clothing. On his original outfit, he had "E=MC^2" on it. I understand what they were going for but I thought it was a little ridiculous. Instead, I went with something more symbolic.

Lastly, I was to reimagine a moment in the first episode.
When the light first appears that causes the cataclysmic event, Taiju, one of the main characters, turns his back on his crush to shield her from the light. Instead, I placed him to face her because her safety and well-being are the utmost priority to him. I also angeled the shot to that he looks like her sacrificing himself and that he is dominating this light despite it enveloping him.
